Salted Sage Paloma | An Easy & Unique Cocktail Recipe With A Delicious Alcohol-Free Option

This Salted Sage Paloma was originally created as a no-ABV drink by Nanda Kampmark of Slow Mixology. She made it as a mocktail recipe and I enjoyed it as such, but it's delicious with tequila, too. If you're looking for a refreshing drink that's unique and not overly sweet, this is the one for you.

I originally saw this recipe on my friend Jake’s Instagram page. A long time ago. And I’ve thought about it several times since then and finally got around to making it. Now I’m just kicking myself for waiting so dang long.

I think part of the reason I waited is that if I’m honest, the thought of salt in a cocktail–and not just around the rim of one– freaked me out. I’ve long seen a pinch of salt or # drops of saline as ingredients in fancy craft cocktails. And I knooowww that a smidgeon of salt really just enhances existing flavors instead of overruling them with saltiness. But I was still afraid. And if that’s you, too, I’m here to say Don’t worry, I promise you won’t feel like you’re licking a block of salt when you drink this recipe.

The salt in the sage syrup is actually the perfect complement to the earthy sage and the bitter grapefruit. Ugh. Really, why didn’t I embrace this sooner? Now I wanna go around sprinkling sea salt in all my syrups.

Using herb simple syrups brings a lot of complexity to mocktails– you won’t miss the alcohol! This recipe is pretty similar to my Grapefruit Rosemary Spritzer. Be sure to check that one out, too, if you’re down for mocktails that don’t only taste like juice. If you’re a big fan of sage, be sure to check out my Avendesora and Autumm in Tuscany recipes, too.

I don’t know about you, but Margaritas feel very summer-y to me. I’m not saying I haven’t ever had one before the Summer Solstice or after the Autumnal Equinox, but I am usually pretty seasonal. I really celebrating the flavors and holidays that are unique to each season. And fall is definitely my favorite of the four.

Buuut it often doesn’t feel like Fall here in central Texas. In fact, it’s typically quite warm up until Halloween. That means there’s a whole month of fall where it’s too hot to enjoy all the cozy traditional things the season has to offer. Sweaters and scarves are a no-go. Warm hot chocolate with extra whipped cream? Hard pass. But apple cider is good both warm and cold so I can work with that.

An ice-cold Apple Cider Margarita seems like the most appropriate cocktail to drink in Texas in October. It gives me the fall feel without making me sweat.

I’ve gotta be honest though and say that this was not my idea. I saw it on my pal @little_cantina‘s feed on Instagram. It wasn’t his idea either but he was definitely the one who inspired me to make my own version of an Apple Cider Margarita.

Many people use tequila blanco (white or silver tequila) for Margaritas. Since we’re going for a warm feel here, tequila reposado works well. It’s got a deeper, slightly sweeter taste than it’s clear cousin.

I also opted to use a Margarita mixer. Now, if you’ve read my 5 Tips for Making Killer Cocktails at home post, you know I always recommend using fresh citrus juice. Sometimes, you need to simply steps and maximize time. Just make sure you use a high-quality mixer. You can hop over to my Instagram to see the brand I recommend. If mixers aren’t your thing, you can use fresh lemon juice or a mixture of fresh lemon and lime juice.

The apple cider is already pretty sweet on its own so I didn’t find that it needed to be sweetened more. Then again, I’m not really a sweet drink kinda girl. If you prefer your drinks on the sweeter side, add 1/4 ounce of agave or honey simple syrup. You can even make it more fall-y and add some cinnamon syrup.

Isla del Sol | An Irresistible 4 Ingredient Passion Fruit Paloma Recipe Made with SimplyGala Syrup

The Isla del Sol cocktail is a passion fruit Paloma that's loaded with flavor. SimplyGala passion fruit syrup gives it the right amount of tropical vibes so you can sip on summer all year round.

The Isla del Sol cocktail is a passion fruit Paloma that’s packed with flavor. It’s not overly sweet and has got just the right amount of tropical vibes so you can sip on summer all year round.

This post is sponsored by SimplyGala. All opinions are my own.

I follow a lot of other mixologists on Instagram and my feed has been filled with passion fruit this and passion fruit that for months. Now, if you’re familiar with my style of cocktail-making, I don’t do fake syrups or drink mixes. I just can’t stomach artificial flavors. Plus a lot of commercial syrups are cloyingly sweet. That’s why I’ve admired all the passion fruit cocktail recipes from afar. I assumed they were using artificial passion fruit syrup and I wanted nothing to do with that.

Shame on me for not doing some research into passion fruit syrups because if I HAD I would’ve discovered much earlier on that SimplyGala syrups are anything but artificial.

If you’ve been around from the early days of Girl & Tonic, you may remember that I’ve actually made a Passion Fruit Paloma recipe before. That one was made with beet simple syrup and passion fruit sparkling water, making it preeetty light on the passion fruit flavor.

Quality ingredients in cocktails make ALL the difference. Most cocktail recipes, especially the ones on this site, are 5 ingredients or less. If you’ve got a sub-par ingredient in the mix, it’s gonna ruin the whole thing. I can’t tell you how many drinks I’ve ruined by trying to cut corners. That’s what happened with the first Passion Fruit Paloma recipe I made. I didn’t wanna spend money on passion fruit syrup so I used the passion fruit sparkling water instead. Now, it’s not a bad drink. I enjoyed it. I’d make it again. But calling it a Passion Fruit Paloma was probably not the right call.

This Isla del Sol recipe is definitely a passion fruit Paloma though. Y’all. It is BURSTING with flavor. Traditional Palomas can leave much to be desired taste-wise but the SimplyGala passion fruit syrup packs the tropical punch it’s asking for. I was honestly shocked at how delicious the syrup was when I took my first taste. I could straight up put a straw in the bottle and call it a day. But seeing as how this a cocktail blog and all, I figured I couldn’t post a recipe that said “Open bottle. Insert straw. Sip & enjoy.” So I lived out my previous passion fruit Paloma fantasy and was not disappointed this time.

The Isla del Sol cocktail is a passion fruit Paloma that's loaded with flavor. SimplyGala passion fruit syrup gives it the right amount of tropical vibes so you can sip on summer all year round.

But like I mentioned earlier, quality ingredients make all 👏 the 👏 difference 👏 in a cocktail.

When I Googled “passion fruit syrup” I was shocked to see that all the name brand ones have artificial colors, high fructose corn syrup, “natural flavors” (another way to say they didn’t use passion fruit- read this article to see how companies manufacture the passion fruit flavor “naturally”), and other things that shouldn’t belong in a cocktail like titanium dioxide and sulfur dioxide.

Umm… I’m sorry, is it too much to ask for it to just be made with passion fruit? Thankfully the SimplyGala passion fruit syrup has answered the call. You know what’s on their ingredient label? 3 things. Pure cane sugar. Water. Passion fruit pulp. *cue Hallelujah chorus set to a tropical tune*

That’s what sets SimplyGala apart from other syrup companies. They make it their goal to create quality products with real ingredients at an affordable price.

If you’re like me you’re still a little hesitant to invest your hard-earned money in a product you’re not sure you’ll like. (Hello, that’s why I used freakin’ passion fruit WATER instead of SYRUP. Don’t let me cut corners like that ever again.) It’s even harder to buy something from a company you’ve never heard of before. Trust me. I feel you. But I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the owner of SimplyGala for a few weeks now so I can bridge that gap for you.

Gala has had a long love affair with food and flavors. She attended culinary school and cooked professionally for awhile before switching to a job that was a little more suitable for a working mom. When her kids were done with their schooling career, she picked her culinary career back up–this time on the beverage side of things. Her knowledge of cocktails fueled her passion for quality cocktail ingredients, so she started making her own. She first sold them on Etsy and at farmers’ markets across California; now, SimplyGala equips people like you and me across the country with high-quality syrups to take our #happyhourathome to the next level.

She’s also been gluten-free for years like me, so we bonded over that. It’s always nice to know that products are not only gluten-free but are also handled by someone who actually knows what that means!

Using SimplyGala syrups in your cocktails means you’re not going to have to compromise on flavor in order to afford them. And THAT is music to my frugal ears.

I’ve been meaning to share this cocktail recipe for months now. Since I started up this blog, actually. It’s been a go-to of mine for over a year now. It’s definitely more of a summery drink, in my opinion. So I decided I would wait until May to post it. The months ticked by sooo slowly (thanks, pandemic).

But then BOOM summer was here and I got distracted by posting classic summer drinks like Piña Coladas and Mai Tais and Jungle Birds. This spiked cherry limeade recipe faded from memory.

One day I posted a quiz on an Instagram story, asking people what they thought my most popular recipe was. It was (and still is) my Cucumber Basil Refresher but nearly evvverryone clicked “Cherry Limeade Margarita“. Huh. That got my attention. Clearly people are fans of this flavor… OH MY GOSH I NEVER POSTED THE SPIKED CHERRY LIMEADE RECIPE I’VE BEEN WAITING MONTHS TO POST! Buhh what have I been doing with my life?!

Okay, that’s a tad dramatic but really. I was shocked to realized I’d never posted this recipe. So naturally I let several more weeks pass by until I’m finally sitting down to type it out now.

This spiked cherry limeade recipe is almost too easy. If you can stir a drink, you can make this cocktail. You might even have the 3 ingredients on hand already.

It’s honestly so easy that it feels a little silly to type out. Once you see it, you’ll think “Wow, why did I never think of that?”

Those are actually the same words that I said when my friend shared this recipe with me. It’s a brilliantly simple idea:

cherry limeade drink mix + liquor + Sprite = spiked cherry limeade

You can use this formula to make any manner of fruity boozy beverage– just change up your drink mix. Cherry limeade is an obvious winner, but I’ve done this with a cucumber melon drink mix, a watermelon drink mix, and several others. The options are almost limitless.

I like using the True Lime brand of drink mixes (you can find their black cherry limeade one here) because they don’t use artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners and their ingredients are also non-GMO. But I definitely have the Walmart brand ones in my pantry, too.

This spiked cherry limeade recipe is almost too easy. If you can stir a drink, you can make this cocktail. You might even have the 3 ingredients on hand already.

As for the liquor to use, take your pick of your favorite clear booze. Vodka is always a good choice because it melds nicely with all flavors. Tequila is great, too, especially if you’re gonna use a citrus-flavored drink mix. Rum’s a pretty safe bet. Gin can get tricky because some gins have a strong juniper taste that might not blend smoothly with some drink mix flavors. But you do you.

You can also use sparkling water in place of the Sprite if you’re looking to cut down on sugar and calories. I’ve found that Spindrift has the strongest lime flavor out of all the lime sparkling waters. It’s my fav and would be amazing in a spiked cherry limeade.

So. Go check your pantry for a drink mix. Pair it with your favorite clear liquor. Pour in something bubbly. Now you’ve got yourself an easy 3 ingredient boozy bev.

Cherry Limeade Margarita | An Easy 4-Ingredient Summer Cocktail

This 4-ingredient Cherry Limeade Margarita is the perfect summer cocktail. It's bright, refreshing, and will remind you of your favorite childhood beverage--only with a tequila twist.

This Cherry Limeade Margarita recipe is perfect for summer sippin’. I mean, who doesn’t find a Cherry Limeade completely refreshing? And margaritas practically demand to be enjoyed on a warm afternoon. I thought I would try combining the two and ooooh man, it did not disappoint.

I think of Cherry Limeades as one of the original mocktails of the beverage world. There’s really just something so refreshing and so summer-y about them. But since this is a cocktail blog, we need to add some booze.

I first got the idea to make this Cherry Limeade Margarita when I was pitting the huge bag of cherries for my brandied cherries (recipe coming soon) and my cherry pit simple syrup. I was wracking my brain for ways to use the syrup and a cherry limeade is the first thing I thought of.

Originally, I was thinking of pouring the cherry pit simple syrup into some vodka and Sprite and calling it a day. An adult Cherry Limeade, if you will. And while that combination would DEFINITELY taste good, I wanted to think of something a liiittle more unique. Then it hit me– a Margarita!

This 4-ingredient Cherry Limeade Margarita is the perfect summer cocktail. It's bright, refreshing, and will remind you of your favorite childhood beverage--only with a tequila twist.

I’ve mentioned before in my Spicy Basil Margarita post that I’m not a huge Margarita fan. It’s not that I don’t like them, it’s just that I’ve gotta be in the right mood for them.

But this idea… this idea was really intriguing to me. I knew I had to at least try it. I had a feeling that the sweet cherry pit simple syrup would really smooth out the harsh acidity that Margaritas are known for. And I was right.

If you read the cherry pit simple syrup post, or if you’ve actually made the syrup yourself, you’ll know that it has a pretty delicate cherry flavor. I wanted to make sure this Cherry Limeade Margarita tasted like fresh cherries.

Muddling fresh fruit is a great way to impart a fruit’s flavor into a drink. It’s definitely the fastest and easiest way to do so. But I decided to infuse some blanco tequila with the fresh cherries. It turned out delicious.

Cherry-infused tequila might sound a little intimidating or difficult, but it’s not. It’s as easy as plopping some cherries into some tequila. The only difficult thing about cherry-infused tequila is having to wait a few days for the cherries to fully steep. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own cherry-infused tequila. You can use these steps to infuse tequila with any other fruit.

Instructions

  • Add the cherries, making sure the cherries are completely covered by the tequila.
  • Seal the container. Store in the fridge for 3-5 days, shaking gently each day.
  • When you're ready to use it, you can strain the cherries out of the tequila.

Notes

This should last for about a year, but I doubt you’ll be able to keep it around for that long!
Feel free to garnish your cherry-infused tequila cocktail with one of the tequila-soaked cherries.

After 5 days of infusing, the tequila will take on a gorgeous pink color. I forgot to take a picture though before I used it. Oops.

I used pitted cherries but that’s not necessary. I had just already pitted all of mine because I was also making brandied cherries at the time. (If you’re in the market for a reliable cherry pitter, this OXO one on Amazon is well worth the $12.)

You’ll notice that this cherry-infused tequila recipe only makes 5 ounces. If you’ve been around Girl & Tonic for a while, you’ve probably noticed that I prefer to make things like simple syrups in smaller batches. This is because I want to make sure I’m able to use up all of what I’ve made before it goes bad.

Now, you can certainly make this Cherry Limeade Margarita recipe without the cherry-infused tequila. But it won’t be as good. Test your patience and wait the 5 days. It’ll be worth it.
