If you didn’t know, Instagram is poppin’ with cocktail recipes. Before starting Girl & Tonic, I was unaware that such a world existed. At first, I was worried when I realized there were so many other cocktail accounts on IG. I mean… competition. Lots of it. But I soon learned that the #drinkstagram community is incredibly supportive. I’ve “met” some truly amazing people on it.

Some of those awesome people and I are in a group DM where were ask for advice on recipes, photography, and share photos of our pets and midcentury furniture (these are my people, y’all!). One of them, @soundtrackmydrink, came up with the idea to do a song swap– each of us picked a song and then that song was secretly given to another member of the group. The task was then to create a cocktail based on that song. Brilliant, yes? Also a great test of our creativity.

I was given @turnstylepoet‘s song of choice: Happiness in Liquid Form by Alfie Templeman. As soon as I heard the beat, I knew I had to go the tiki route. I mean, if you listen to the song, it sounds like summer.

The beat of the song is peppy. It makes you want to dance or at the very least, drive with the windows down. A quintessential summer song, imo.

To match the summer disco vibes in Happiness in Liquid Form, I knew I wanted to use some traditional tiki flavors. Rum. Pineapple. Passionfruit. Lime. I also wanted to add a little earthiness to the mix since the song almost demands to be listened to outside with grass beneath your feet and the sun warming your skin. Enter smoky mezcal and the hemp bitters.

Beneath the upbeat tempo are some tortured lyrics, though. Alfie can’t figure out why his feelings are unrequited. To match his bitterness and cynicism, I added the ginger. It’s an underlying spiciness that doesn’t compete with the rest of the drink’s bright summer flavors. But it’s there.

Finally, to complete this Happiness in Liquid Form cocktail recipe, I added a spritz of peppermint hydrosol to match the initial happy-go-lucky mood of the song.

I realize this drink seems a little more complex than some of my recipes in the past, but it’s really not difficult to make. You can skip the peppermint hydrosol and the hemp bitters and still have a truly tasty drink. If you can’t find a pineapple-ginger juice blend, simply muddle a slice or two of fresh ginger in your cocktail shaker. Or add half a teaspoon of ginger paste.

Like many other cocktail bloggers, I’m constantly scrolling through my Instagram feed looking for inspiration from my #drinkstagram fam. Some of my favorites, like the Mezcal in Maui and the Summer Sipper, are recipes made by my friends that I’ve tweaked just a tad. Sarah over at theboozyginger.com shared this Spiced Cranberry Mai Tai recipe on her Instagram a few days ago. I knew immediately that I had to recreate it. Tropical flavors with a hint of holiday flair? Sign. Me. Up. Sarah’s recipe originally called for dark rum but I used spiced rum to give it a little extra warmth.

I love the holiday and Christmas seasons. But I’m a warm-weather girl to the core. Don’t mishear me, though– I do want it to be cold on Christmas Day. And maybe New Years. But after that, I’m done with the cold. Bring back the sun. Blessedly, I live in Texas so I don’t have to put up with low temperatures for too long. I was recently gifted a couple bottles of white wine but here’s the thing– I’m not a big white wine drinker. It’s not that I don’t like it. It’s the fact that it often tastes like straight-up juice to me. Which is a problem for a few reasons. 1) I chug it. Bad idea. 2) It’s expensive compared to actual juice. 3) I actually like the taste of alcohol. That’s three strikes. So although I’m highly unlikely to purchase my own white wine, I’ll happily chug sip it if it’s served to me.

But then I thought I could actually change problem #3 by adding in some alcohol. And that would also solve problem #1, too. And if I’m sipping and savoring the drink, it justifies problem #2. So basically I think I’ll start using it cocktails all the time now.

In fact, with one of the bottles I received, I made some mulled white wine with apple cider. It was so good. It had the classic warm spices of a traditional mulled wine but was much lighter on the palate. A real winner.

But for this second bottle, I wanted to delve deeper into the realm of mixed drinks. I wanted to make a true white wine cocktail. Not a mulled wine, not a sangria, but a cocktail.

Truthfully I would’ve been at a loss for what to make but my Instagram friend Risa had shared the Obispo de Cuba recipe on her page awhile back. This recipe is a lighter rendition of the Obispo de Cuba, also called the Bishop, that’s made with dark or gold rum and red wine. But since I used wine from Bordeaux, it seemed only fitting to call it the Bishop of Bordeaux. I thought about translating it in French to be fancy but Évêque de Bordeaux looks a little intimidating for non-French speakers like myself.

For this Bishop of Bordeaux cocktail recipe, you can use any fruit-forward white wine. If the wine is on the dry side, you can add more simple syrup to the drink if you’d like. This particular white Bordeaux that I used here was very sweet– too sweet for my wine-sipping preference. But it worked so well in this cocktail recipe.

You may notice that this recipe is very similar to a classic Daiquiri. If you’re a Daiquiri fan, I think you’ll enjoy the small addition of white wine in this cocktail. It brings another layer of sweet fruitiness that works really well.

I’ve gotta admit that I was hesitant to incorporate wine into a cocktail, especially white wine. But I really enjoyed this Bishop of Bordeaux cocktail and plan on making it again soon. Next up on my list is to start incorporating red wine into some recipes.

The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail and it’s probably surprising that I haven’t posted the recipe here on Girl & Tonic yet. It’s one of those recipes that I have a hard time sitting down to write out because I have so many other recipe ideas swirling around in my head. I’m sure I’ll write it out one day. But for today, we’re gonna be talking about it’s warm & friendly cousin: the Rum Old Fashioned.

As with any cocktail that is spirit-forward, the quality of your rum here will make or break the drink. Normally, I’m all for penny-pinching. I don’t think you have to buy top-shelf alcohol to make a great cocktail. But save your lower-end rums for drinks that use ingredients with stronger flavor profiles, like a Jungle Bird, a Sea Monster, or a Dark & Stormy.

For this Rum Old Fashioned, you’re gonna want to use that nice bottle of golden, aged rum you’ve had stashed away for a while. Or maybe this will be the perfect excuse for you to splurge a little on a good-quality rum at the liquor store. I personally love having a range of spirits on hand for everyday drinks or special occasions.

Now, a traditional Old Fashioned calls for a sugar cube. You can definitely use a sugar cube in a Rum Old Fashioned. However, since we’re going the rum route, it feels too natural to use Demerara sugar. You can make it into a Demerara simple syrup like I did or you can use a teaspoon of it.

If you make the Demerara syrup, you’ll be able to use it in a lot of other cocktails like the classic Mai Tai or the aforementioned Jungle Bird. It’s also incredible in coffee. Demerara sugar has got a great toffee taste to it. You can sub in turbinado sugar, too.

Sometimes it’s tempting to skip the garnish on a cocktail. I’m guilty of it myself. But don’t skip the orange peel in this one. It adds just the right amount of orange essence without overpowering the drink.

It’s also tempting to forego adding bitters to a cocktail, After all, so many recipes just call for 1-3 dashes or drops of them. They make a big difference in any drink, but especially in this one. My friend refers to bitters as “seasoning for cocktails” and she’s right. You *can* skip bitters in a recipe… but it’s like going without seasoning on a chicken breast or french fries. You could… but why?

Plus, a bottle of bitters is inexpensive will last you for years and years. They’re a worthy investment for any home bartender. You can also experiment with other flavors of bitters such as orange bitters, cardamom bitters (I love!), and chocolate bitters. You could even make a Rum Old Fashioned with a couple dashes of chocolate bitters. Mm. Now that sounds nice.

This is also a cocktail that’s made without a cocktail shaker. Traditionally, cocktails that are spirit-forward are mixed and chilled by stirring them in a mixing glass and then straining them into your glass of choice. Here is a really pretty cocktail mixing glass I’ve had my eye on for a while. You can always just use the cup portion of your cocktail shaker. Or just make the drink right in the glass. I won’t tell anyone.

I’ve been meaning to share this cocktail recipe for months now. Since I started up this blog, actually. It’s been a go-to of mine for over a year now. It’s definitely more of a summery drink, in my opinion. So I decided I would wait until May to post it. The months ticked by sooo slowly (thanks, pandemic).

But then BOOM summer was here and I got distracted by posting classic summer drinks like Piña Coladas and Mai Tais and Jungle Birds. This spiked cherry limeade recipe faded from memory.

One day I posted a quiz on an Instagram story, asking people what they thought my most popular recipe was. It was (and still is) my Cucumber Basil Refresher but nearly evvverryone clicked “Cherry Limeade Margarita“. Huh. That got my attention. Clearly people are fans of this flavor… OH MY GOSH I NEVER POSTED THE SPIKED CHERRY LIMEADE RECIPE I’VE BEEN WAITING MONTHS TO POST! Buhh what have I been doing with my life?!

Okay, that’s a tad dramatic but really. I was shocked to realized I’d never posted this recipe. So naturally I let several more weeks pass by until I’m finally sitting down to type it out now.

This spiked cherry limeade recipe is almost too easy. If you can stir a drink, you can make this cocktail. You might even have the 3 ingredients on hand already.

It’s honestly so easy that it feels a little silly to type out. Once you see it, you’ll think “Wow, why did I never think of that?”

Those are actually the same words that I said when my friend shared this recipe with me. It’s a brilliantly simple idea:

cherry limeade drink mix + liquor + Sprite = spiked cherry limeade

You can use this formula to make any manner of fruity boozy beverage– just change up your drink mix. Cherry limeade is an obvious winner, but I’ve done this with a cucumber melon drink mix, a watermelon drink mix, and several others. The options are almost limitless.

I like using the True Lime brand of drink mixes (you can find their black cherry limeade one here) because they don’t use artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners and their ingredients are also non-GMO. But I definitely have the Walmart brand ones in my pantry, too.

This spiked cherry limeade recipe is almost too easy. If you can stir a drink, you can make this cocktail. You might even have the 3 ingredients on hand already.

As for the liquor to use, take your pick of your favorite clear booze. Vodka is always a good choice because it melds nicely with all flavors. Tequila is great, too, especially if you’re gonna use a citrus-flavored drink mix. Rum’s a pretty safe bet. Gin can get tricky because some gins have a strong juniper taste that might not blend smoothly with some drink mix flavors. But you do you.

You can also use sparkling water in place of the Sprite if you’re looking to cut down on sugar and calories. I’ve found that Spindrift has the strongest lime flavor out of all the lime sparkling waters. It’s my fav and would be amazing in a spiked cherry limeade.

So. Go check your pantry for a drink mix. Pair it with your favorite clear liquor. Pour in something bubbly. Now you’ve got yourself an easy 3 ingredient boozy bev.

Ingredients for a Spiked Cherry Limeade

  • 1 packet of cherry limeade drink mix powder (I love this one)
  • 1 1/2 – 2 oz preferred clear liquor (I usually opt for vodka)
  • 4+ oz Sprite

How to Make a Spiked Cherry Limeade

Add ice to a highball or Collins glass. Pour in the drink mix powder, your preferred liquor, and Sprite. Stir until the drink mix is dissolved. Garnish with a lime wheel and a fun paper straw.

  • 4+ oz Sprite*

*You can use unsweetened lime sparkling water if you’re wanting to save calories and watch your sugar intake.
