If you didn’t know, Instagram is poppin’ with cocktail recipes. Before starting Girl & Tonic, I was unaware that such a world existed. At first, I was worried when I realized there were so many other cocktail accounts on IG. I mean… competition. Lots of it. But I soon learned that the #drinkstagram community is incredibly supportive. I’ve “met” some truly amazing people on it.

Some of those awesome people and I are in a group DM where were ask for advice on recipes, photography, and share photos of our pets and midcentury furniture (these are my people, y’all!). One of them, @soundtrackmydrink, came up with the idea to do a song swap– each of us picked a song and then that song was secretly given to another member of the group. The task was then to create a cocktail based on that song. Brilliant, yes? Also a great test of our creativity.

I was given @turnstylepoet‘s song of choice: Happiness in Liquid Form by Alfie Templeman. As soon as I heard the beat, I knew I had to go the tiki route. I mean, if you listen to the song, it sounds like summer.

The Happiness in Liquid Form cocktail recipe is the perfect balance of fruity and earthy and it practically demands to be sipped on outside in the summer sun. It combines zesty lime, sweet pineapple, tropical passionfruit, and spicy ginger with smoky mezcal and aged rum.

The beat of the song is peppy. It makes you want to dance or at the very least, drive with the windows down. A quintessential summer song, imo.

To match the summer disco vibes in Happiness in Liquid Form, I knew I wanted to use some traditional tiki flavors. Rum. Pineapple. Passionfruit. Lime. I also wanted to add a little earthiness to the mix since the song almost demands to be listened to outside with grass beneath your feet and the sun warming your skin. Enter smoky mezcal and the hemp bitters.

Beneath the upbeat tempo are some tortured lyrics, though. Alfie can’t figure out why his feelings are unrequited. To match his bitterness and cynicism, I added the ginger. It’s an underlying spiciness that doesn’t compete with the rest of the drink’s bright summer flavors. But it’s there.

Finally, to complete this Happiness in Liquid Form cocktail recipe, I added a spritz of peppermint hydrosol to match the initial happy-go-lucky mood of the song.

I realize this drink seems a little more complex than some of my recipes in the past, but it’s really not difficult to make. You can skip the peppermint hydrosol and the hemp bitters and still have a truly tasty drink. If you can’t find a pineapple-ginger juice blend, simply muddle a slice or two of fresh ginger in your cocktail shaker. Or add half a teaspoon of ginger paste.

If you’ve ever been to Sonic, you’ve heard of (& most likely tried) their famous Ocean Water. It’s super refreshing. A little tart, a little sweet. A perfect touch of tropical coconut. But there’s one problem I have with it. It’s blue.

When I was real young– I’m talking 5 or 6– blue-colored things didn’t bother me. I wouldn’t think twice before swiping a sour blue raspberry gel while waiting in line at Blockbuster to rent the latest Mary Kate and Ashley movie. But it didn’t take me too long to realize that the vibrant blue used in various foods and beverages is NOT natural. Raspberries aren’t blue. Neither are coconuts.

Now, I know that most red dye is not natural either. But my brain can make allowances because red foods like strawberries are pretty dang red. But blue stuff? No. I just can’t. Even blueberries and blackberries don’t make stuff that color blue.

It’s an unfortunate thing that Sonic uses blue coconut in their famous drink because I love the flavor of Ocean Water. In the past, I’ve ordered it and closed my eyes while I drank it. But eventually, I stopped that because I couldn’t abide that much artificial coloring. It’s the same reason I renounce all the tropical blue cocktail drinks.

But then…. then I learned that there actually IS a naturally-derived electric blue pigment. What?! A natural blue? That I can put in foods and drinks? Turns out Spira discovered how to turn spirulina algae into a bright blue. They sent me a sample of their Electric Sky pigment and I am forever grateful. Now I’ll not only have a way to make fun blue cocktails, but I can use it to safely dye my kid’s cupcakes, play doughs, homemade bath fizzies, and anything else I want!

Y’all. Spira’s Electric Sky could replace Blue Dye #1 one day. How awesome would that be? No more fake dyes in our foods. No more synthetic dye sensitivities or allergies. This stuff could revolutionize the industry. Beyond the fact that it’s free of the fake stuff, it’s also plant-based, vegan, is sustainably-produced with no petroleum-based ingredients (🙌), and even has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Yep. It looks cool and it’s good for you, too. Can’t get much better than that.

Seeing as how this is a cocktail blog, I figured I would make a boozy version of my old childhood go-to. This Ocean Water cocktail is sure to refresh you and remind you of warmer days. And if you want to keep things real refreshing, just leave out the booze. I actually made it without alcohol the first time and it was amazing.

Like I mentioned, this Ocean Water cocktail (or mocktail) is healthier than it’s namesake (I mean… minus the alcohol). Instead of using coconut flavoring, I used real coconut water. I did try making this with lime sparkling water instead of Sprite and it was alright– I definitely preferred the Sprite version. But you can use sparkling water if you want it to be healthier. And the star of the show, the Electric Sky pigment, kept me from having to use artificial blue dye #1 to get the original blue look.

Like many other cocktail bloggers, I’m constantly scrolling through my Instagram feed looking for inspiration from my #drinkstagram fam. Some of my favorites, like the Mezcal in Maui and the Summer Sipper, are recipes made by my friends that I’ve tweaked just a tad. I’ve got drink recipe after drink recipe saved on my IG but I don’t think I could ever get through all of them at this point!

Every now and then I see a drink recipe that not only stands out but that I also happen to have all the ingredients for. I didn’t waste much time before making this one. I hope you won’t either.

Sarah over at theboozyginger.com shared this Spiced Cranberry Mai Tai recipe on her Instagram a few days ago. I knew immediately that I had to recreate it. Tropical flavors with a hint of holiday flair? Sign. Me. Up. Sarah’s recipe originally called for dark rum but I used spiced rum to give it a little extra warmth.

I love the holiday and Christmas seasons. But I’m a warm-weather girl to the core. Don’t mishear me, though– I do want it to be cold on Christmas Day. And maybe New Years. But after that, I’m done with the cold. Bring back the sun. Blessedly, I live in Texas so I don’t have to put up with low temperatures for too long. But for those days when I wanna embrace the holiday season while dreaming of warmer weather, I’ll be drinking this holiday tiki cocktail.

If you’ve never had a traditional, classic Mai Tai, you should definitely make one. The original recipe is worlds different than most of the Mai Tais you’ll ever find at a restaurant. The only difference in ingredients between a classic Mai Tai and this Spiced Cranberry Mai Tai is the cranberry juice (go figure) and the cinnamon syrup. And pleeasse don’t be intimidated by the cinnamon syrup– you can make your own with just 3 ingredients: cinnamon sticks, sugar, and water. Yup. This post walks you through the easy steps.

Kraken’s Cavern | A Spiced Pomegranate Cocktail That’s Perfect for Fall

I’ve been brainstorming ideas for a Halloween cocktail all week. I knew I wanted something that was going to be dark in color. There isn’t a lot of food out that is naturally super-rich in pigment. At least not rich enough for a small amount to saturate an entire cocktail. But then I thought about those dark, almost-black crimson bottles of pomegranate juice that I see at the grocery store all the time. If you’ve never had pomegranate juice, it’s uber tart and ultra-pigmented. Perfect for a Halloween cocktail.

Pears, apples, cranberries, and figs get all the attention in fall but did you know that pomegranates actually belong on the list of fall fruits, too? I didn’t until recently. As in, just now when I looked it up to see if I could justify making a fall pomegranate cocktail. Turns out they’re in season from late September into early December. Yep. Fall fruits.

Kraken's Cavern is a delicious, spiced pomegranate cocktail. It's bright and fruity, thanks to the pomegranate juice, but has some warm complexity thanks to the spiced rum, cinnamon syrup, and ginger beer.

If you’ve noticed a trend here on Girl & Tonic, gin is kinda my go-to spirit. I just love it so much. Each brand varies wildly from the next and it’s an extremely versatile spirit. The first time I attempted to make this Kraken’s Cavern, I used gin. And it was okay. It just… didn’t feel very fall-y. And the cinnamon simple syrup that I was so excited to use didn’t quite mesh with the gin I had chosen. I was wanting this recipe to come across much warmer… How could I warm it up?

I was already using cinnamon syrup (very warming) and ginger beer (lots of great spice & kick). Aside from actually serving the drink warm, I didn’t know what to do. Then it hit me. Spiced rum. YES. I could already imagine what it tasted like before it hit my tongue. One of my favorite go-to cocktails of all time is the Sea Monster. Unfortunately for the tastebuds of the world, it’s not a well-known drink. But I’ve been seeking to change that for a few years now.

The 4 building blocks of the Sea Monster are spiced rum, grapefruit juice, grenadine, and ginger beer. And since grenadine is a pomegranate-flavored syrup (not cherry, like many believe), I knew that the pomegranate and the spiced rum would marry wonderfully in Kraken’s Cavern. Kraken is also my favorite brand of spiced rum but any spiced rum would work well in this recipe.

Kraken's Cavern is a delicious, spiced pomegranate cocktail. It's bright and fruity, thanks to the pomegranate juice, but has some warm complexity thanks to the spiced rum, cinnamon syrup, and ginger beer.

This cocktail is so good y’all. It’s got some depth and complexity while remaining pretty simple. I used some Pomegranate Margarita mix in this recipe because I had a gifted bottle on hand. But you can definitely just use more pomegranate juice in its place. You may also want to add a little more cinnamon syrup, too, since the Pom Marg mix was pretty sweet. Or you know, keep it tart. That’s the beautiful thing about cocktails– they’re completely customizable. I mean, I used pomegranate margarita mix with rum. All cocktail “rules” are meant to be bent and broken.

If you’re looking for a more traditional fall cocktail, check out my Mulled White Wine, the Autumn in Tuscany, or Morgan Mends the Line. A good ol’ Rum Old Fashioned also makes for a great fall cocktail. But if you’re in the mood for a unique recipe, don’t sleep on Kraken’s Cavern. Or should I say in?

Kraken's Cavern is a delicious, spiced pomegranate cocktail. It's bright and fruity, thanks to the pomegranate juice, but has some warm complexity thanks to the spiced rum, cinnamon syrup, and ginger beer.

Bishop of Bordeaux Cocktail | A Unique White Wine Cocktail with Rum and Lime

I was recently gifted a couple bottles of white wine but here’s the thing– I’m not a big white wine drinker. It’s not that I don’t like it. It’s the fact that it often tastes like straight-up juice to me. Which is a problem for a few reasons. 1) I chug it. Bad idea. 2) It’s expensive compared to actual juice. 3) I actually like the taste of alcohol. That’s three strikes. So although I’m highly unlikely to purchase my own white wine, I’ll happily chug sip it if it’s served to me.

But then I thought I could actually change problem #3 by adding in some alcohol. And that would also solve problem #1, too. And if I’m sipping and savoring the drink, it justifies problem #2. So basically I think I’ll start using it cocktails all the time now.

In fact, with one of the bottles I received, I made some mulled white wine with apple cider. It was so good. It had the classic warm spices of a traditional mulled wine but was much lighter on the palate. A real winner.

But for this second bottle, I wanted to delve deeper into the realm of mixed drinks. I wanted to make a true white wine cocktail. Not a mulled wine, not a sangria, but a cocktail.

The Bishop of Bordeaux cocktail is a white wine cocktail with white rum, lime juice, and simple syrup. This recipe is a riff on the classic Bishop cocktail, also known as the Obispo de Cuba.

Truthfully I would’ve been at a loss for what to make but my Instagram friend Risa had shared the Obispo de Cuba recipe on her page awhile back. This recipe is a lighter rendition of the Obispo de Cuba, also called the Bishop, that’s made with dark or gold rum and red wine. But since I used wine from Bordeaux, it seemed only fitting to call it the Bishop of Bordeaux. I thought about translating it in French to be fancy but Évêque de Bordeaux looks a little intimidating for non-French speakers like myself.

For this Bishop of Bordeaux cocktail recipe, you can use any fruit-forward white wine. If the wine is on the dry side, you can add more simple syrup to the drink if you’d like. This particular white Bordeaux that I used here was very sweet– too sweet for my wine-sipping preference. But it worked so well in this cocktail recipe.

You may notice that this recipe is very similar to a classic Daiquiri. If you’re a Daiquiri fan, I think you’ll enjoy the small addition of white wine in this cocktail. It brings another layer of sweet fruitiness that works really well.

I’ve gotta admit that I was hesitant to incorporate wine into a cocktail, especially white wine. But I really enjoyed this Bishop of Bordeaux cocktail and plan on making it again soon. Next up on my list is to start incorporating red wine into some recipes.
